You Gotta Take the Floppy Back
Sony recently announced that they will be discontinuing physical games and will move to an only digital model in the future. They announced this the same week they announced that some movies they had sold through the store would no longer be accessible to people who purchased them and existing downloads would also be removed. So, despite saying people bought these, it was just a long rental. Flash over to one AI CEO (I can't remember which one) saying that humans no longer have privacy and people need to get over it and you have a situation where corporations own everything you think is yours. At least the courts have decided that farmers can repair their tractors.
I've long said I don't really care TOO much if my genetic data is released with a bunch of others or any other private information because it's usually mixed in with enough that doing anything to me specifically is difficult. Yeah, certain things can be done to me using the bulk info but it's rare (less rare these days) for a specific persons genetic data to be used against them. I also don't typically buy physical games anymore so I'm all for removing physical stuff.
But when it's that we don't even own that stuff anymore? Yeah, I'm having troubles. And AI is what is making it easier to pull my specific data out of millions to use against me. If it's on a computer somewhere, it isn't safe. Unless it's on an old nuclear silo floppy disc.
But hey, maybe that's the solution. I've been all for digitization since lots of paper makes my nose tickle, but we the people need to start getting stuff in physical media if we want to keep our stuff safe. Even just having a USB stick that isn't constantly connected to the Internet would lower the chances of important information being stolen.
No matter how good digital security is, it can and will be broken. Try and get by Sadie and Capone begging for head pats in order to get to my filing cabinet though. Not gonna happen. Some things, like having the information in a hospital, will still probably be worth the risk. Yeah, that's bad info to get stolen, but the info being brought together and easily accessible will save lives....I imagine.
Social media bans are starting to pop up over the world for underage people and I'd argue we need to keep going to protect the youth. Not necessarily ban anything, but teach them new ways to protect their sensitive information.
One thing that is said is that if you don't want a nude photo of yourself online, you shouldn't take the photo. While this is true, it shouldn't be. If you wanna send a naked pictures to your spouse, you should be allowed to. It shouldn't be huge risk. It's not your fault it got stolen. But a Polaroid would help this.
Or actually punishing those responsible. That's my preferred method but in this world we live in sometimes we need to find workarounds because politicians are dumb and aren't there to protect individuals. All hail anarchy. All hail floppy discs.
