Piggy
This past weekend was fathers day (Happy belated!). I don't consider myself much of a father, by the time I met my daughter she was thirteen and I really haven't had to do TOO much. I still try to be there for her and help support her in whatever endeavors she participates. She was working this weekend so I didn't see her much but she decided to make a father's day supper on Thursday instead. I was excited that I wasn't going to have to cook. Then she told me what she was cooking.
Pork chops.
Now, dear reader, I know what you're thinking. "That sounds good! Pork chops rule!" You didn't grow up in my house though. Wait.....yes you did. Well then you know how my parents cooked meat. I like to think of them as good cooks, but the steaks and pork chops I ate when growing up had more in common with a cardboard box than the pig it came from. Mom always said they were just trying to make sure us kids didn't get sick from raw meat and tried to keep on the safe side of that. So, I found myself sitting alone at the table after everyone else left chewing relentlessly, trying to force myself to gulp the meat down (That's what she said!).
At this point, I've had three good steaks in my life and one good pork chop. All of which I ate when I was north of twenty-five years. At least I knew how they can be good, but Belle doesn't cook much so I was a bit worried.
She didn't let me down though. It was a pre-marinated pack of chops from CO-OP and she just cooked them up right so that they weren't to tough to eat. I had to get by my uncertainty at first, but once I had the first bite I was good to go.
And it makes me think I should try some seafood again. I've never been a big fan but I'm also aware that not all of it has that Tuna taste or fishy, Sask lake taste. I've had scallops, crab, lobster, fish, etc. but all was in Sask. And I don't mind when the girls take me to a sushi place. I usually order something I know I'll like and then try other stuff. Most times you can't really taste it that much anyway. I've found things that way I wasn't a big fan of, but also found some stuff I liked. Still nothing as good as Pizza-ghetti though.
The wife is always talking about heading to Greece or somewhere out there and doing a cruise. Someday, maybe when I want to get super sick. But, if/when we do travel more, I know I'll need to try some stuff. I know I could go to India and just eat butter chicken, but there is so much more to try!
I do find myself sticking to what I know way too much though. Pasta and sauce is really good! I don't know if being forced to finish meals I didn't like as a kid is part of it, but probably. And don't think I'm trying to blame my parents. They were trying to make sure I was fed and had four other mouths to feed. I'm sure the grocery bill was big enough as it was without having to buy a different meal for each kid. They could have just cooked a better steak though.
Yeah, you're right. I probably would have just bitched about it being pink.
