Learning

I was watching a Hank Green video a few weeks ago and he made a comment that has stuck with me. I don't remember exactly what the entire video was about, but he basically started out saying that educating people about many issues doesn't work and we know it doesn't. I know that sounds bad but I'm also paraphrasing. We've taught people about climate change, trans rights, etc. and it doesn't matter for most people. If they have a thought in their mind, no amount of education will change that unless they want it to. That's not to say that you can't teach an individual something, but it's hard to do it for a lot of people and yeah, we know that.

I think that has a lot to do with curiosity. I've been bugged before about not travelling the world by people who spend their average day just doing their job, watching TV and learning nothing new. I am constantly ingesting new facts and knowledge though. Do I remember all of them? Hell no, but I am always curious about stuff. I could go into depth about the causes of this, schools, society, etc. but that is a subject that has been beat to death. And this is my blog so I'll talk about myself instead.

It's made me realize why I've been getting bored of my career recently. I don't really learn new things anymore. I'm at the point where I just do what needs to be done and anything that needs to be changed is done by an engineer. I would love to make a career change where I'm just a researcher for a YouTube channel or just analyzing data for some research study. Imagine how much you could learn every day!

I have no idea how a person would get involved in that though. One of the guys on the Veritasium channel made a comment in a video that he just emailed Derek one day and that was that. No job posted or anything. Maybe that's what I've got to do.

I think one of my issues for that though is that my resume doesn't look great on the education side for that. After college, all I have is WHMIS courses and stuff like that. Nothing that stands out. Not to mention that I am in my late 40's and all the kids these days are more up on the lingos and the hoopla of the "Societal Interior Nets." Or whatever they call it these days.

To bad I'm not just an older Scottish gentleman with and EXCELLENT accent that just makes people say "Well, I Never!"

Get an exciting career as a crab inspector. Or better yet, mediocre astronaut. The kind they don't ask to speak at the Science centre.
