Back to the Music
Music. It seems that the timeline of the recording industry is finally recovering after COVID. All the music was coming out in batches but it seems to be spreading out a bit now. Over the past few years I've started listening to an artist called Jason Bieler and the Baron Von Bielski Orchestra. His music is listed in the prog genre but I wouldn't list it there. It has a lot of those same hooks and riffs that have been going since Beethoven but with much darker lyrics. But the music sounds happier. Happy music but the art style is Victorian plague doctor.
It's good stuff to listen to, but I wouldn't go out of my way to suggest him. Until his last album, though that's hardly because of him. He released an album featuring The Baroness. She has a very pop star/country music pop voice and the songs are completely reimagined, but still retaining the riffs. One song that was originally a dark, acoustic tune is now a lounge song. And her pipes are just phenomenal.
But, just who is The Baroness? This is something I've seen pop up a couple times in the last few years: I have no fucking clue. While still doing The Cockpit, I put The Baroness on and the Pilot tweeted at the metal band Baroness, which is understandable since that is all you can find online. I'm not even sure it's the same Baroness. It could be just a random woman he found and gave the moniker Baroness so go with his Baron Von Bielski thing.
I kinda like the mystery though. It doesn't really matter who she is as long as I enjoy the music. Which I do. Of course, this makes it hard to find other stuff of hers, but admittedly, I haven't looked SUPER hard.
Technology Connections had a video recently about how people don't want to curate their own feeds anymore and are happy to let algorithms do it. He indicated how Bluesky had a page only for stuff you follow. This is something I've missed from Twitter and others a lot since I only want to see the bands or people I follow. It was also nice to see the video and know that it isn't just me that feels that way. We can search for stuff, if we want to. I'm not searching hard for The Baroness cause I don't feel like it, but I might make a point to search for stuff in the future.

As soon as I saw The Baroness I was like - oh yeah - that metal band. Guess not!
All this to say - I'm seeing a weird little shift in music. Because music is personalized and algorhythm based, the real music fans are looking for something completely different and boutique. They don't want something given to them by Spotify. They want to discover it in a club or on a poster on the street. It's informing some of the ideas I have about how I want to promote my material in the future. I've all but stopped listening to the music gurus out there. I have no interest in grinding out 5 songs a week just so I can keep the algothythms happy.
