Sports!
This past Tuesday, Pilot had a late night post about not really knowing what he wanted to post about. In order to not copy him exactly, I am making sure this post comes out nice and early. Though I am not sure what it will be about at this point. I suppose I will just keep vomiting on the page and see what happens.
I was watching some Roller Derby this past weekend on the old YouTube. Belle might have been playing in the game if they needed a sub but it turned out they didn't. In any case, the game ended up getting called off shortly after half time due to one of the players breaking an ankle. Basically didn't want to move them off the track until an ambulance came (fair enough).
The Roller Derby reaction to injuries is so much different than any other sport though. Anything else would of had replays and everyone watching. In Derby, they stand in front of the player so nobody can see them, pan the camera off them and put some sort of graphic on the screen. In this case they even cut the feed since I guess they screamed in pain at first.
As much as my football/hockey watching self wanted to see all the replays of what happened, I think the sport is definitely better this way. People on opposing teams like each other. It's all about playing, not hurting people. In hockey and football you try to hit hard to make people second guess coming for you. In this, it's just a tactic to win. It's a bit refreshing to see a different attitude.
It's the same as watching Olympic sports. It's about skill, not hitting. As much as we all know this, as long as people keep paying to see someone hit someone else, it's not going to change. And I love watching is as much as the next guy so I'm to blame too.
That was one of the things I liked about Ultimate Frisbee. It was 100% no contact. Sometimes little bumps happened as you were both going for a disc but as long as it wasn't too hard, it was ignored. If it was hard, then you called a foul. Also meant I didn't get other peoples stinky sweat mixed in with my stinky sweat.
My stinky sweat is a gift to humanity and I won't have others spoiling it.
I suppose all this violence is better than the alternative. Those people out in the field shooting at each other. As much as it doesn't feel like it, we do live in a fairly peaceful time. Having somewhere to let out that aggression might be alright, but I don't know. I just want to score the winning basket in the football round.

What's weird is I did have ideas of what to write about. I just was not in the mood for fun stuff.
They often talk about Canadians love of violent hockey (and I add Football) and how it stands in contrast to how we carry ourselves in the world. I think violence is part of the human condition. It's where we use it that brings us to a new plane. On a hockey rink or a boxing ring there are no victims, just combatants. Consent y'all.
