Bloggity Blog Blog

I wrote a different blog post this week. Then I realised I had written 75% of it in my previous post guitar pedals post. So, I decided to do the noble thing and place it in the drafts pile to use at a later date, once the memory of my previous pedal post has faded.

Speaking of pedals, I may have a line on a Joyo Splinter for $30. A whopping $10 savings off the new version. At that price point, new or old doesn't really matter. By the reviews online it's a pretty good distortion pedal, especially for the price. But, I just have to hold on to the weekend and hope the guy doesn't sell it before then. If he does, oh well.

As of the publish date of this, I am a jobless hobo for a few days. Oh no. One of the things I've thought about previously, and more seriously considered since meeting my wife (I think I dubbed her the tower controller or something?) is the thought of going solo. I mean business wise, not personal wise. Although, sometimes đŸ¤”.....

Anyway, better stop that line of thinking before more emoticonjiis appear. My line of work is not something that really needs to be done in office. Remote work is possible and just as efficient as in office. A lot of companies use subcontractors to help them do some drafting. It would be easy enough to set it up and do some of that work. Hardest part would be paying for a decent computer and the CAD software.

At least, on the actual work side. The REAL hardest part is getting clients. I don't know if any of my readers know me, but I am what the Mongolians call, an introvert. I get anxiety when I need to talk to people which is not a good thing when working as a contractor. There are online options, such as Fiverr, but after looking at them I decided every single one of them is so flooded by cheap, Indian labour that it's hard to get noticed. Lots of those guys are just as good or better than me for a tenth of the cost so it's not something I could break into easily.

No, my own business type deal probably isn't in my future. That hasn't stopped me from thinking about a business. I often think of a name or what I'd do. Some is just random wood art that I could sell or maybe start making geese and snails like my dear ol' grandpa. I'd just have to learn to weld again. And hopefully not be as bad as I was the first time.

I have a couple small geese, two small snails and a big longhorn snail from my grandpa. The small snails I see daily. One sits on my desk at work and the other is above our sink at home so we can put our rings on his antennae when washing dishes or cooking. I swear that snail has been married to my wife more than me.

This past Christmas, Belle was short of funds and was afraid she could get us gifts. I gave her a list of cheap things plus some stuff she could make. She delivered. The small snails now have toques, coats and I fashioned a friendship bracelet she made for me into a scarf for one of them. They have become a wonderful link back to home for me when at work.

So, of course, if I were to make a business, 'Stone Snail' or 'Rock Snail' would be some excellent names. Microsoft Co-pilot doesn't have a preference between the two but will go on and on about the differences between them. What makes an AI turn Neutral?

Stone Snail rolls of the tongue nicely but I think Rock Snail just sounds better and more to my tastes. Could also go Rock Goose or Stone Goose but I feel the reference to a goose would scare people away. Make them break down in tears or something. Those mighty bastards of flight.

Of course, I don't have to decide now or anything. At this point I have no plans to make or sell anything. It's just a theoretical idea that I think we all roll around in our heads. I tend to do that a lot knowing full well that I will never use the ideas, but I think that's alright. Maybe someday, when I'm retired or just have more time/willpower, I'll start making stuff and sell it at a trade show. Probably won't want to go outside though. For now, it's just a dream dream dream.

I'm not sure if the desire I've had is quite the same as yours but it at least rhymes. I've always wanted to have a thing - a project that's mine. The Cockpit was absolutely that and I wish that I'd had the capacity and resource to turn that into something more. A podcast or get it synicated on other radio stations.

In many ways, my new project, Jeremy and his Kazoo is my new attempt at that. It's not paying any bills - and in fact has cost me no small amount of money. But I have this great little catalogue of songs, a brand and some goals ahead. So who knows.

As far as a name, there is a pretty famous B-52's song called "Rock Lobster". You could differentiate yourself from grandpa by making a different crusteacian out of stones and scrap. Or just steal the name from that CJTR show, Rock Mollusk. What I'm saying is don't let AI steal for you - do it yourself.
