The Annex

I am a big fan of the Fallout games. Primarily Fallout 3 and beyond as I haven't played the earlier 2D ones for more than five minutes. I love the post apocalyptic setting and the technology that is in it. It just scratches all the right itches for me.

One of the big things I love about it is the amount of lore, history and explanation that goes into everything that has happened in the world. In case you aren't aware, the idea is that after World War 2, China and the USA continually built bigger and bigger nukes and everything in daily life became nuclear powered. Vehicles, appliances, everything. The art style for the USA potion of it also stuck to the 1950's style. On October 23rd, 2077 the two superpowers fired of their missiles leading to death and destruction.

So, already this is ripe for 'what if's' from every angle (What if the US had done this instead of that before the bombs fell.) not to mention who's (Who fired the first nuke?). One of the major events before the bombs fell is that the USA annexed Canada in order to secure oil supplies and secure their borders.

This isn't anything new but with the discourse going on in the USA right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see some bloodshed if the incoming president does some of the things he has claimed he will. Now, I don't want to get all political of what will or won't happen in this post as we really just don't know. However, if blood were to be shed in a civil war of sorts in America, I could see it spilling over into Canada a little bit. I don't think any of this would lead to the annexation of Canada, but between real life and Fallout it makes me wonder how well the US would actually handle Canada.

Canada may not have the best military, but we do have a history of going absolutely apeshit in wars. We also have a lot of hunters and such that are spread across a very large area. Capturing major cities could be doable but good luck in the fields. I wonder if it would become a Ukraine vs. Russia kind of battle. One country is woefully underpowered but is holding on. I guess the difference there would be that Russia is known to have shit technology while Ukraine is getting the best. The USA has the best and would use it.

But, here's hoping we never have to find out. And I'll go back to just making comments about how a bridge beam doesn't have enough bolts in it or that the supports on the floors are not nearly big enough in game.

On a more serious side note, there is always pressure from NATO for Canada to spend more on it's military while I think most Canadians are fine not paying to have people go kill people a world away. The main idea of an army always touted as defending your borders, not invade other countries. So, I feel we should focus on defensive technology and equipment. Tools to shoot down incoming missiles, better radar, better armour, etc. Stuff we can send to other countries knowing it will be used to protect, not kill.

There are a lot of cool things that have come through popular culture that I've missed the boat on over the years. Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, bathing. But the one I regret the most missing is Fallout. Of course, I could just pick it up - I start with Fallout 79 right?

Yeah I always wonder what an invasion of Canada would look like. Sometimes I think it would be fun to be in the fight. Because I would absolutely be like my forefathers. I'd take tips from the Viet Cong playbook. I doubt I'd win, but I'd make them HURT before I go down. Kinda like my marriage!

I'm here all day folks.
