True North

Headed up to the Cameco Key Lake facility this week for work. Over 600km north. Flew out on a 50ish seater airplane and back on the same model but newer and slightly longer for a 70ish seater. First time I've ever been on a propeller plane. All flights were good without much turbulence. The trip back was delayed 4 hours due to the snow and the fact that the de-icer at site broke down. And they needed that. We woke up to -336 degrees on Wednesday morning.

Fuck that.

Site was pretty good though. Bed kinda sucked but I had my own room and bathroom in the construction camp which was just atco trailers. The rooms were small but all I needed. They fed us good food and after 12 hour days all I did in the evening was watch TV and sleep.

A lot of guys to 12 days on, 12 days off. I don't think I could do that. Two nights was too many for me. If I didn't have a family it wouldn't be bad, but I do. And I like to spend time with them. There's some guys out there that I'm sure have wives that are happy to see them leave for two weeks.

Beautiful scenery up there. I didn't take any pictures because we've all seen the northern Sask forest, but on the flight in, as we were starting to descend I saw a lake that made me go "What the fuck?" No, it wasn't Key Lake itself, it turns out it was McMillan Lakes. The s is important. There are lots of Lakes named McMillan but this is a group of lakes, and the largest one has very nice curve on the south west side.

This is not a man made lake. I did a quick Google search and basically just found a page saying the lake exists and it probably has fish.

My first impression is that it was created by a meteor coming in shallow from the north east and landed in an existing lake that built up that shape, but my education in these things stems from YouTube so that is not scientific consensus. I need some peer review. So, review it in the comments!

I give this lake 8.6 on the lake scale. Good shape, slightly different name that others and mysterious and shy.

I'm glad you shared a bit about the trip, I was curious.

And yeah, I took one look at that lake and said "that there is a crater lake". But maybe not a meteor? Maybe Michelle had a temper-tantrum?
